Why an annual check pays for itself
A solar array has no dashboard warning light. Most failures are silent: production drifts down a few percent, then a few more, and the app makes it look like a cloudy month. By the time a homeowner notices, the loss has often been running for a year or more. An annual health check turns that slow, invisible bleed into a caught-and-fixed line item, and times it right before the low-sun winter months, when you can least afford lost output.
What the health check covers
- Production review, the specialist reads your Enphase, SolarEdge, or SMA history and compares actual output to what the system should be producing for its size and the season, flagging any real decline versus normal degradation
- Microcrack / thermal scan, a thermal pass finds cracked cells and hot spots that are invisible to the eye but run hotter under load (see our thermal imaging audit)
- Connector and wiring inspection, MC4 connectors, junction boxes, and conduit checked for corrosion, arcing signs, rodent damage, and heat discoloration
- Inverter / optimizer health, error logs reviewed, microinverter or optimizer status confirmed panel-by-panel, firmware currency noted
- Rapid-shutdown test, the code-required safety shutdown is verified operational
- Mounting and flashing integrity, rails, lags, and roof penetrations checked for looseness, lifting, or seal failure that could become a leak
- Soiling and shading, new tree growth, debris traps, and bird activity noted, with a cleaning recommendation if the panels need it
- Written report, a plain-English summary of what's healthy, what to watch, and what needs action, with photos
When it matters most
- Systems 5+ years old, past the honeymoon, when connectors corrode and early inverter failures start
- Before an installer warranty expires, a 10-year workmanship warranty is worth using; find the problems while the claim is free
- After a hail, wind, or smoke event, impacts and heat leave damage that doesn't always break glass
- Before selling the home, a documented healthy system is a selling point; a surprise dead string at inspection is a price cut
- When the app just looks a little off, the check tells you whether it's dirt, degradation, or a fault
Bundle it with the clean. The health check pairs naturally with a warranty-safe cleaning, the specialist is already on the roof, so many homeowners book the annual inspection + clean together and save versus buying them separately. Cleaning restores the production you're losing to soiling; the health check protects the production you'd lose to a failure. Together they're the once-a-year maintenance a solar array actually needs.
What it costs
- Standalone health check + diagnostics: $189
- Health check with thermal microcrack scan, included in the annual package
- Annual inspection + warranty-safe clean (bundled): $389, or discounted on the seasonal plan
If the check turns up a real fault, the findings hand off directly to a C-46 repair quote, no second diagnostic, no starting over.
